Mylor

Perched on a hillside in an idyllic setting, an 1860’s cottage with its pretty, rambling garden looks down on the picturesque Aldgate River. The owners wanted to add a swimming pool and the dilemma was how to integrate a sleek modern pool into the existing surrounds that had softly seasoned over the years. Working with the owners and Landscaper, we came up with a design which blurred the old and new, combining recycled and natural materials complementary to the setting and weaving in generous drifts of soft planting to echo the style of the old garden. To create a rustic feel yet still remain compliant, the pool safety fence was set in a recycled timber framework with the treads of the adjacent steps built to match.  The pool surrounds are stone as are the raised beds that retain the slope of the land and as well provide opportunities for planting. Additional stone was collected from the site, ‘dressed’ by Elite Outdoor Design and Construct’s team and used to create a fitting façade for an old cold room, cleverly creating a feature from what was previously mundane.  An existing undercover area was revamped to create an inviting space for entertaining and outdoor eating and a pergola added. The old garden is lovely – steps and paths wind through beds of old-fashioned plants shaded by mature trees, many with colourful autumn foliage.
